Frequently Asked Questions on Black Friday

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is the company's fourth annual retail sale, an annual event Amazon promotes as the "biggest day of the year" for its Prime membership service. The 36-hour sale – which began on Monday evening at midnight – is a time when Amazon encourages customers to shop during the day on Monday and then again at the same time on Tuesday at midnight.

How does it work?

All Amazon Prime users – which is estimated to be in the 75 million-strong population in the US – are given the option of 30-minute early access to new releases, Lightning Deals, deals on big ticket items, and "lightning deals".

Then, when it opens for the general public – usually at 9pm EST – there are hundreds of thousands of products on sale, with other discounts available for items in other categories.

There are also limited-time Lightning Deals that disappear with the click of a button once the sales period is over.

Lightning deals usually last around one hour, and there are now more than 130,000 available on Prime Day, as well as thousands of Lightning Deals.

It's the first time Amazon has promoted its annual Prime Day sales event in the UK, but it is offering £50 off an annual Amazon Prime membership when you spend £40 or more on Amazon in the UK between 6pm on Monday to midnight on Tuesday.

If you're an existing Amazon Prime member – and not a student or child – you can access the Prime Day deals right now by signing up to a free 30-day trial.

What happen on Amazon Prime Day?

The whole world stops, the FOMO kicks in, and your day is effectively ruined. Here's what it's like, or should I say, what it would be like if there was one day only when you could afford anything you wanted.

How do I prepare for Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is its own beast. For starters, it isn't an actual holiday, it's merely a day on which it can price cut hundreds of thousands of items. Like Black Friday, Prime Day will only last for one day, but it's not limited to any specific time.

To give you an idea, Prime Day last year started at 9pm and ran until 1am the next morning, giving Amazon just 36 hours to compete with the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. This year it will last for 48 hours, starting from October 13 to October 14.

For those unfamiliar with Amazon, the company has a deal every hour on its site and several other online retailers. So it can be hard to keep track of where the deals are. Amazon has a list of its own Prime Day deals that are updated each day. The company also advertises the deals on its site, but there's no guarantee that it'll stick to that plan

Is Amazon Prime Day better than Black Friday?

To be clear, it's important to note that although this is not officially an official Black Friday deal, it's probably pretty safe to assume that it won't be around for long. Right now, you can get the Yi Action Camera for just $45.99 if you are a Prime member (unless you're in the US, in which case you can get it for $48.99). Even though it's technically part of Prime Day, it's not limited to Amazon Prime members (like some of the deals on Amazon's own devices are).

And if you've been waiting to pick up some of those Amazon-exclusive Echo gadgets, we're going to assume you've been waiting for this. That means everything from the Echo Dot to the Echo Look to the Echo Spot is part of Amazon Prime Day — and even all of them at the same time, if that's what you want.
